Biography (note)
  • The Vitagraph Company of America was, along with Edison and American Mutoscope & Biograph, one of the pioneer American film producers. Founded in 1897 by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith, the company was first located in Manhattan, but in 1906 it built a state-of- the-art studio in Brooklyn. On their backlot at East 14th St and Locust Avenue, Vitagraph produced historical dramas, literary adaptations, comedies of manners, Shakespearean opuses, and traditional melodramas with popular actors such as John Bunny, Maurice Costello, Florence Turner, Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Drew, and Flora Finch. Moving from shorts into features like Captain Blood (1924), the company remained in production until it was sold to Warner Brothers in 1925 and became the Vitaphone Studio, where many early sound films were made.
