Summary
"The British Expeditionary Force was small at the start of World War I. Yet, when deployed to France in 1914, it prevailed against the German army through professionalism and tactical skill, strengths developed through hard lessons. Britain had gone to war against the South African Boer republics in October 1899, expecting little resistance, but a string of defeats shook the military's confidence. From Boer War to World War shows how this bitter combat experience reshaped the British Army's tactical development. The Boer War brought the British face to face with modern warfare. With sweeping, open terrain and smokeless gunpowder, soldiers were picked off before they know where shots came from, and the infantry's close-order formations spelled disaster in battling the well-armed, entrenched Boers. The British Army ultimately overcame the Boers in 1902, but the costs of the war led to public outcry. Spencer Jones's fresh interpretation adds to the historiography of the Boer War and World War I by emphasizing the continuity between them."--Back cover.
