Summary
Set in China in the 1850s, The Bondmaid tells the story of Peony, a young Chinese bondmaid of the Ezra ben Israel family. Narrated by Peony, The Bondmaid examines both the intermingling of Jewish and Chinese culture in this community and explores notions of identity and self-identification.
