  1. Nelson Lyon and Terry Southern became friends when they wrote for the comedy television program Saturday Night Live, in the late 1980s.
  2. Topics of letters include: sex; Saturday Night Live; celebrities known to Southern and Lyon; scripts; Screw magazine.
  3. Southern collage assembled on mock personal stationery, showing bare breasted pornographic film star beneath word “Candy” opposite the men’s magazine description of her, which Southern has annotated in blue pen, characterizing Lyon as her fan.
  4. First anonymous cartoon [ca. 1950], by the anonymous cartoonist dubbed “Mr. Dyslexic” by Art Spiegelman (see introductory essay to Bob Adelman’s Tijuana Bibles. New York: Simon & Schuster Editions, 1997), annotated by Southern in black pen, featuring the Communist spies Whittaker Chamber and Alger Hiss, is titled “Chambers and Hiss in Betrayed,” and shows them sexually engaged; second anonymous cartoon [ca. 1930], shows young man with gun entering apartment of young woman in sheer negligee, seeking food and finding sex, annotated by Southern in black pen.
  5. Margaret Joan Sinclair Trudeau Kemper (b. 1948) is the former wife of Pierre Trudeau, the 15th Prime Minister of Canada. As her marriage disintegrated, she adopted an uninhibited lifestyle, which included scantily clothed appearances at El Mocambo nightclub in New York. Southern’s sexual annotation on Trudeau photograph as if written by Trudeau to Lyon.
  6. Photograph of Southern, Sellers, and Starr taken when film The Magic Christian was being filmed (1969), starring Sellers and Starr, and based on Southern’s 1959 comic novel, and for which Southern wrote the screenplay.
