Summary

1. Joanna Harcourt-Smith (or Joanna Leary) met Timothy Leary when he was a fugitive in Europe after escaping from prison in 1970. She traveled with him to Afghanistan where he was apprehended by American authorities in 1973. Harcourt-Smith subsequently administered the Starseed Information Center, which published Leary's writings and advocated for his release while he served in prison from 1973 to 1976. The Joanna Harcourt-Smith papers related to Timothy Leary contain publications, correspondence, court documents, and ephemera related to Leary's life and work in the 1970s. A scrapbook created by Dennis Martino contains clippings, ephemera, and photographs, most of Harcourt-Smith. The collection also contains Harcourt-Smith's address book.
