Summary
Paul Sperry delivers a lecture-like discussion on songs, song performing, song composers, recitals as a genre, poems used for songs, composers' work on words, the dynamics of singing for better expression, the historical tradition of singing as a social and practical means of passing over information, the benefits of a recitalist, and personal experiences as a musician of this category. The talk is interrupted by the insertion of the live performances of the following songs: Amour de moi (Medieval French song) ; Erlkönig / music by Schubert ; words set on Goethe's poem ; Bird and the beast / music by Dougherty ; words based on Gowers' essay ; Azulão (Blue bird) / by Jayme Ovalle ; Come ready and see me / by Hundley ; I rise when you enter / by Chanler. Each song is preceded by Sperry's brief interpretation of the lyrics into the English language.
