Norton Owen, Director of the José Limón Dance Foundation, reads aloud at a gathering held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the José Limón Dance Company, the text of a proclamation from Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, outlining the career of José Limón and declaring the day [January 9, 1997] "José Limón Dance Company 50th Anniversary Day in New York City;" speaks about the program at the Company's debut performance, at the Belasco Theater; introduces guest speakers Pauline Koner and Ernestine Stodelle, and screens a short, silent film of a segment of Doris Humphrey's The story of mankind [during the screening, only ambient noise can be heard]; Pauline Koner speaks about The story of mankind, including its being the occasion of her dancing for the first time with Limón; describes the scenario of each sequence, including the costumes, designed by Pauline Lawrence, and the possible interpretations of the work; Ernestine Stodelle speaks about José Limón including her first impressions of him; Limón as a person and as an artist; Limón's forming of the Little Group with Stodelle, Letitia Ide, and Eleanor King; Humphrey's and Charles Weidman's support of the Group; Humphrey's and Limón's co-founding of the José Limón Dance Company; her admiration for Ide in the role of Destiny in Humphrey's Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías; the idealism and imagination of José Limón and his associates, Humphrey, Weidman, and Lawrence [from approximately 38:30 minutes into the streaming file to approximately 54:40 minutes, the recording consists of ambient noise and the soundtrack to the film of Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías]; Carla Maxwell, the artistic director of the José Limón Dance Company, speaks, in general terms, about the company's past and future and introduces the dancer Nina Watt, who is to perform Limón's Chaconne [the final approximate 10 minutes of the recording consists of the musical accompaniment to Nina Watt's performance of Chaconne].
