- "Published in the summer of 1888 ... A deluxe edition ... was originally advertised as limited to seventy-five copies ... but only twenty-five books ... were actually issued. An ordinary edition ... was originally advertised as limited to 500 copies ... but only 250 copies were actually issued"--Kahan (cited below). In the deluxe copies, the illustrations are printed chine collé.
- Some copies have a broadside notice by Emerson mounted on front pastedown, captioned "To the student" and dated Sept. 1889. In these copies, plate xix, "A way across the march" (facing page 113) has been replaced for technical reasons and the corresponding guard sheet removed; the replacement plate is titled "Mending the wherry." Copies are known with both plates.
- Contains 32 photogravures and 15 small halftones in the text. "The plates have been reproduced on copper from my original negatives by the Autotype Company, the Typographic-Etching Company and Messrs. Walker & Boutall ... The illustrations printed in the text were reproduced from my original photographs by the Typographic-Etching Company"--Pages iii-iv.
- Plates accompanied by guard sheets (not counted in collation) with letterpress plate numbers and captions.
- Sixth preliminary page is numbered "iv."
- Title page printed in red and black.
- Last two pages are advertisements for Emerson's Life and landscape on the Norfolk Broads and Pictures from life in field and fen.
