Summary
  1. The ABC News presentation of Liberty Weekend 1986, a celebration of the centennial and restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Presidents Ronald Reagan and François Mitterrand deliver addresses commemorating the occasion; Chief Justice Warren Burger of the U.S. Supreme Court administers the Oath of Allegiance to a group of new citizens (including an off-camera Mikhail Baryshnikov); and ABC newscaster Ted Koppel introduces those distinguished, naturalized citizens awarded the Medal of Liberty. Hollywood entertainers and Reagan administration officials introduce parts of the event, which includes speeches, history segments, and performances. Baryshnikov's new status as a citizen is alluded to by Robert DeNiro, then directly reported by Peter Jennings and Barbara Walters before he arrives to perform a Balanchine pas de deux with Leslie Browne. Overall visual quality fine, but there are several seconds of audio and video dropout at 1:26:33, 1:27:23, and 2:28:45. This recording includes commercials. Writing on the original videocassette label: "Date Misha Became US Citizen".
