He has taught at Fresno State University, New York University, Tufts University, and Vanderbilt University, and he has been a visiting writer at the University of Cincinnati, Princeton University, Columbia University, Vassar College, Brown University, the University of Alabama, and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as writer in residence at the National University of Australia at Canberra.
