- The Philip Levine Papers contain all of the poet's writings through 1993, documenting Levine's creative process in notes, drafts, and fair copies. The collection comprises loose leaves of notes and notebooks, manuscripts, typescripts, proofs, and galleys ; also present are incoming and outgoing correspondence (personal, professional, and business), numerous photographs, works by others, and clippings, programs, articles, and other printed ephemera.
- Access to Philip Levine's personal journals is restricted for his and his wife's lifetimes.
- Incoming correspondence comprises over 3,000 letters from writers such as Bill Broder, Edward Hirsch, Mark Jarman, Donald Hall, Garrett Kaoru Hongo, Donald Justice, Larry Levis, Robert Mezey, Sharon Olds, David St. John, Gerald Stern, Mark Strand, C. K. Williams, and Charles Wright ; the collection also includes Levine's incoming professional and business correspondence.
- The Philip Levine Papers were purchased by the Berg Collection through Glenn Horowitz Bookseller (NYC), in 1993.

- Biography
- In 1995, Philip Levine received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (for The Simple Truth) ; over the course of his career he has also won three National Endowment for the Arts grants in poetry, two Guggenheim fellowships in poetry, the Award of Merit from the National Society of Arts and Letters, the American Book Award, the Frank O'Hara Memorial Prize, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. He has taught at Fresno State University, New York University, Tufts University, and Vanderbilt University. He has been a visiting writer at the University of Cincinnati, Princeton University, Columbia University, Vassar College, Brown University, the University of Alabama, and the University of California, Berkeley, and also served as writer in residence at the National University of Australia at Canberra. In 2011, he was appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress.
