Summary
Mikhail Baryshnikov and White Oak Dance Project perform Past Forward, a retrospective and celebration of Judson Dance. Live works alternate with video sequences created by Charles Atlas and narrated by Baryshnikov. The opening video (in Volume I) depicts a brief history of the Judson via stills and interviews, then each live work is bracketed with a quick description by its choreographer. Public participation is part of the program: local dancers and community members take part in several works. Audio reverb and echo problems in Volume I, poor visual quality in Volume II. The audio issue is most noticeable during the opening film and narration.
Volume I: Scramble (Simone Forti, choreographer) -- Chairs (David Gordon, choreographer; John Philip Sousa, composer) -- Satisfyin' Lover (Steve Paxton, choreographer) -- Flat (Steve Paxton, choreographer) -- Talking Solo (Yvonne Rainer, choreographer) -- Whizz (Deborah Hay, choreographer; Alvin Lucier, composer) -- Huddle (Simone Forti, choreographer) -- Chair/Pillow (Yvonne Rainer, choreographer; Les Dickert, lighting designer; Tina Turner, performer) -- Carnation (Lucinda Childs, choreographer; ) -- Foray Forêt (Trisha Brown, choreographer; Spencer Brown, lighting designer; Robert Rauschenberg, costume designer) -- Homemade (Trisha Brown, choreographer) -- Trio A (Yvonne Rainer, choreographer) Volume II: The Matter (David Gordon, choreographer; Ludwig Minkus, composer) -- Concerto (Lucinda Childs, choreographer; Eric Cornwell, lighting designer; Anne Masset, costume designer; Henryk Górecki, composer)
