Summary
Mikhail Baryshnikov and White Oak Dance Project perform Past Forward, a retrospective and celebration of Judson Dance. Live works alternate with video sequences, created by Charles Atlas and narrated by Baryshnikov. The video (in Volume I) depicts a brief history of the Judson via stills and interviews, then each live work is bracketed with a quick description by its choreographer. Public participation is part of the program: local dancers, students, and community members take part in several works. Poor overall visual quality. While audio track is available for the video segments and pre-recorded music, there is no recorded sound for the audience or onstage activity. This is most noticeable in "Chair", since Raquel Aedo and Emmanuèle Phuon traditionally hum or sing "Stars and Stripes Forever" in the last part of their performance.
Volume I: Scramble (Simone Forti, choreographer) -- Chair (David Gordon, choreographer; John Philip Sousa, composer ) -- Satisfyin' Lover (Steve Paxton, choreographer) -- Flat (Steve Paxton, choreographer) -- Exit (Deborah Hay, choreographer; Samuel Barber, composer) -- Whizz (Deborah Hay, choreographer; Alvin Lucier, composer) -- Volume II: Huddle (Simone Forti, choreographer) -- Chair/Pillow (Yvonne Rainer, choreographer; Les Dickert, lighting designer; Tina Turner, performer) -- Homemade (Trisha Brown, choreographer) -- Foray Forêt (Trisha Brown, choreographer; Robert Rauschenberg, costume designer; Spencer Brown, lighting designer) -- Trio A (Yvonne Rainer, choreographer) -- The Matter (David Gordon, choreographer; Ludwig Minkus, composer) -- Concerto (Lucinda Childs, choreographer; Eric Cornwell, lighting designer; Anne Masset, costume designer; Henryk Góreck, composer)
