Summary

1. Sydney Gruson was a reporter, editor, and executive at The New York Times between 1944 and 1986. The Sydney Gruson papers document Gruson's tenure as Times senior vice president, executive vice president, and the vice chairman of the board of directors between 1974 and his retirement in 1986. These files consist of Gruson's correspondence with colleagues and friends about personal matters; letters and internal memoranda with his New York Times associates on both the newspaper and corporate sides, mostly concerning business issues and editorial decisions; and records regarding the acquisition and management of The New York Times Company subsidiary and affiliate companies, notably The Chattanooga Times, The International Herald Tribune, and US Magazine.
