Summary
  1. The papers consist primarily of letters from American military officer, explorer, and politician John C. Frémont to various parties relating to both professional and social matters, including the procurement of portraits of Fremont by Matthew Brady; purchases of property, and letters of introduction. Also present is documentation of a case brought against Fremont in London by William Gibbs and others for monies owed. Additionally, the papers contain letters from Fremont's wife, Jessie Benton Frémont, including one to an unnamed recipient in Washington vigorously defending her husband's reputation; letters from their daughter, Lily; autographs; and a circular letter from the First and Third Ward Republican Association.
