- Summary
- The collection consists of personal papers, In English and French, belonging to members of the Rolette, Hooe, Gaulthier, and other allied families and their estates. The papers predominantly relate to real property, but also include correspondence, marriage licenses, and a baptismal record. Land papers include deeds, correspondence, and other documents relating to property on or near Mackinac and Bois Blank Islands, Michigan; Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; and Quebec, Canada, owned by Mackinac Company fur trader [Jean] Joseph Rolette (1781-1842) or members of allied families or their estates, including Laurent Rolette, Joseph Rolette, Jr., Charles and Magdeleine Gaulthier, Emilie Rolette Hooe, and others. Correspondence consists predominantly of incoming letters to Joseph Rolette regarding legal matters and real estate, and of letters to Emilie Rolette Hooe, daughter of Joseph Rolette, regarding his estate, the estate of her husband, Major Alexander S. Hooe, and her own real property. A few personal letters to Hooe are also present.
