Summary
  1. In the first part of the recording, WNYC presents an excerpt of the radio broadcast of the fifth annual George Gershwin Memorial concert and contest, sponsored by the B'nai B'rith Victory Lodge (New York, N. Y.). The intermission talks in the control booth includes interviews of the chairs of the event (Leo Bernstein [no relation to composer Leonard Bernstein], Greta Rausch and Dr. Carlton Sprague Smith (not interviewed, presents later on stage), interviews of the performers of the event (Ray Lev, Rose Bampton, Lawrence Tibbett and George Jessel), interviews of the conductor and presenter of awards of the event (Mishel Piastro and Richard Rodgers) and an interview of the grand prize winner (Bryan Dority). The interviewer is Mr. Buckman (WNYC). Guest speakers onstage (Sidney Burdick, Frank Goldman and Carlos P. Romulo) talk about George Gershwin, his legacy and the call to peace in the Cold War. At the end of the first part, Richard Rodgers presents the grand prize award to Bryan Dority and honorable mention award to Robert Kurka. In the second part of the recording, Richard Rodgers discusses problems of writing songs for the theater for a broadcast at his neighborhood radio station (WLIZ, Bridgeport, Conn.).
