Summary
Richard Rodgers was interviewed in New York for the BBC radio production "The life and music of Richard Rodgers". Rodgers tells stories of his early years, how he discovered the theater thanks to Jerome Kern, working with the Fields family (Lew and Herbert Fields) and Rouben Mamoulian in the early days, his meetings and working relationships with both Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II, and analyzing some of their most successful shows. At the end of the interview, Rodgers talks about the history and evolution of American musical theater, how Paul McCartney and John Lennon write "classic" and memorable songs, how Burt Bacharach's music is special, how he doesn't understand "Hair", his work at Lincoln Center, and his home life.
