Summary
Panel 1: John Meehan discusses meeting Alexei Ratmansky in Kiev and asking him to dance with Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ratmansky talks about why he started dancing and joining the Bolshoi School at the age of 10, steps taken to get into Peter Pestov's class at the Bolshoi School, some video excerpts of Ratmansky dancing, starting to choreography after leaving Copenhagen and returning to Kiev for a commission, only hearing about Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov after the Iron Curtain came down in the Soviet Union in 1986-87 and then watching videos of them dancing, how it felt first dancing in a George Balanchine work, receiving a big commision, learning to choreograph on other dancers, being commissioned to create Nutcracker in Russia but then fired and selected to created Nutcracker in Copenhagen, the idea of Bright stream and its original production in the 1930's, being asked to direct the Bolshoi Ballet at the age of 34. Panel 2: Ratmansky talks about his premiere of Bright stream for the Bolshoi, being the director of the Bolshoi Ballet with 220 dancers and 20 coaches, How he got along with the coaches, the overwhelming amount of work as director, what it was like directing his peers, the repertory he brought to the company, performing 250 shows a year, hiring dancers and training them in his new repertoire, leaving the Bolshoi after five years because he needed more time to choreography, becoming a freelance choreography and joining ABT as their resident choreographer, seeing ABT for the first time in Russia, and feeling the support of the ABT dancers and Kevin McKenzie. Panel 3: David Hallberg's experience with Bolshoi Ballet, how Ratmansky's presence is still visible there, Hallberg's foot injury, Nancy Raffa discusses Ratmansky's approach to choreographing, how Ratmansky choreographs and changes pieces until performance time, Hallberg describes working with Ratmansky, how Ratmansky gets dancers to push themselves, Raffa talks about what Ratmansky demands from his dancers, and Hallberg remembers being teriffied at the premiere of the Ratmanksky's Nutcracker with Gillian Murphy. Panel 4: Ratmansky discusses working with dancers in general and how sometimes he is not able to get what he wants, signing a ten year contract with ABT, what his yearly schedule is like, fear of not being able to choreography, working with and being inspired by composer Leonid Desyatnikov (Russian seasons and Lost illusions), difficulty with creating an evening length narrative ballet and his ballet Anna Karenina, using Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for one of his works, and Ratmansky talks about his new work using Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony no. 9 which will be part of a triple bill.
