- The American dancer-choreographers Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn founded the Denishawn School of Dancing and the Related Arts in 1915. The Denishawn Dancers, trained at the school, toured widely both in the United States and abroad. Its many illustrious alumni, among them Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman, sealed its reputation as an artistic force to be reckoned with. This drawing may have been created as a tribute to the popularity of its performances and its wide-ranging influence.
