Summary
Panel discussion 1: Discussion of the new Minnesota Opera production of Doubt and their new works initiative, how the opera came about, Douglas J. Cuomo's collaborative process with John Patrick Shanley and working together during the early workshops, how they decided to incorporate elements from the film and play both, when Kevin Newbury became involved in the process and how he got the job, how Cuomo worked with the prose libretto when composing this music, Newbury summarizing the story of Doubt, and Cuomo talking about how he choose the musical and vocal style for this opera. Panel discussion 2: How the institutional context of Minnesota Opera's new opera program affected their work with this opera, the role Dale Johnson (artistic director, Minnesota Opera) has played in developing this opera, what Cuomo needed as a composer after receiving this commision, Newbury's institutional needs as a director, how he choose his design team and what stage imagery he was looking for in this work, Newbury presents slides of the sets and costume designs, the Sisters of Charity design concept for the nun habits, and the difference and pleasures of directing a new opera compared to a previously created one. Panel discussion 3: What surprised Cuomo and Newbury the most regarding the changes developed during the workshops, audience expectations regarding comparisons to the play and movie, how Newbury directs and leads rehearsals, and the importance of the final Mrs. Miller scene with an excerpt shown as a turning point in the storyline.
