Panel discussion 1: Discussion of the new Minnesota Opera production of Doubt and their new works initiative, how the opera came about, the collaboration process, John Patrick Shanley's decision to write the libretto, when Kevin Newbury became involved in the process, Shanley's expections for the opera, how Douglas J. Cuomo developed the musical context. Panel discussion 2: How the context of a new opera helped with creating the production, the importance of Minnesota Opera knowing how to workshop and develop new works, starting point for Cuomo after receiving this commision, how Newbury choose his design team, Newbury presents slides of the sets and costume designs, the Sisters of Charity design concept for the nun habits, the rehearsal process beginning on Jan. 3, 2013; how the process of a new work is different from an established work, Newbury talks about the differences between directing opera and plays, and the difference in preparation and the length of time needed to develop the sets. Panel discussion 3: The evolution of Doubt and how crucial the workshop process has been, how these workshops are crucial for changing the content of the opera and how it is much easier to change the script in a play, Cuomo talks about writing vocal parts for specific singers, the excitement of creating a new work, comparing the difference for Cuomo between working with prose and rhyme couplets, and the importance of the final Mrs. Miller scene excerpt shown as a turning point in the storyline.
