Summary
Pieces for four two-dimensional jointed paper puppets, intended to be cut out and assembled. The top two puppets are the commedia dell'arte characters Pierrot and Pierrette. On the bottom are a Chinese man and woman, both garbed in western versions of Asian costume. Both hold their hands with forefingers pointed upward in a gesture that has become a convention in European ballet depictions of Chinese dancing.

  • The term "image d'Epinal" signifies a cheap colored woodcut or wood engraving, named after Epinal, the French provincial town that was their center of production in the nineteenth-century. Although these prints had a long history and portrayed both secular and religious subject matter, in the second half of the nineteenth century the Pellerin family of Epinal gained special recognition for their images designed for children.
