4 prints : lithograph, hand-colored; 21 x 16 cm. or smaller, on mount 29 x 22 cm.
Summary
Portrayals of four female performers in costumes decorated with different suits from a deck of playing cards. The prints in this collection have been trimmed, and thus lack most of their captions and publication data; they were mounted on larger sheets and the performers' roles handwritten below. Each print is numbered, signifying that the four were part of a series that has not been identified.

  • Two prints from this collection contain the same images published by Maison Martinet as part of the Galerie dramatique, ca. 1858: numbers 840, Melle Nelson, rôle de la dame de Carreau. dans Vive la joie, and 842, Melle Maria [Jacob], rôle de dame de coeur dans Vive la joie et les pommes de terre. Both were the work of the same printer, Imprimerie Lemercier, who also produced the examples in this collection.
  • Vive la joie et les pommes de terre, a revue by Henri Thiéry, was first presented at the Théâtre des Folies Dramatiques, Paris, in 1859.
  • Richard Park Beard, 1925-2009, the former owner of these prints, made his debut as a professional dancer with Ballet International in 1944, and subsequently danced with Ballet Theatre, Ballet Society, and the New York City Ballet. He also danced and choreographed for television and nightclub shows.
