Summary

1. Numbered costume prints depicting actors and singers in Parisian theatrical presentations, produced by the lithographic firm of G. [Godefroy] Engelmann. All except one bear the initials AG, for the costume designer Auguste Garneray. The exception, captioned "Vizentini d'après Lecomte," was drawn or designed by Augustin Vizentini after Hippolyte Lecomte. Although the items in this collection have been arranged consecutively in numerical order, they may belong to various series; note that two prints bear the number 3.

Biography (note)

1. Auguste Garneray was a Parisian painter, printmaker, illustrator, and stage designer who designed costumes for the Académie Royale de Musique, the Paris Opéra, and the Théâtre Français. He was particularly noted for his skill at adapting contemporary costume to evoke other countries and periods.
2. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France, which also holds a copy of the print of Mr. Garcia in Don Juan, identifies it as planche 3 of the series Recueil de tous les ouvrages dramatiques.
