  • The ballet referred to as Benowsky in the subtitle may be André Deshayes's Beniowsky, or the exiles of Kamschatka (music, Adrien Boïeldieu), first performed at the King's Theatre in London in 1836. The ballet was inspired by a historical figure whose name is usually given in English as Maurice Benyovszky, 1746-1786, who fought against authoritarianism in several countries. This print may depict a scene from the ballet.
