Biography (note)

Modern grace depicts a moment from Giacomo Onorati's ballet Alonso e Cora, first performed in London in 1796. The dancers in the print are (left to right): Rose Didelot, Charles Didelot, and Mlle. Parisot.
Fanny Elssler, known for the fire and sensuality she brought to the Romantic ballet of the 1830s-1850s, appears in her signature dance, the cachucha she arranged and performed in Jean Coralli's Le diable boiteux (music, Casimir Gide), first presented at the Paris Opéra in 1836. She danced the cracovienne, another of her famous character dances, in Joseph Mazilier's La gypsy (music, François Benoist, Ambroise Thomas, and Marco Aurelio Marliani) at the Paris Opéra in 1839.
Marie Taglioni, considered the quintessential Romantic ballerina, excelled in ethereal and otherworldly roles such as the title role of La sylphide, choreographed by her father Filippo Taglioni in 1832. In La Gitana, created by Filippo in 1839, she ventured into the ballet of local color, conveying the exotic flavors of foreign lands. The sylphide, her most famous creation, inspired many imitations, among them the winged lady on the cover of Sylphide quadrille.
Russian-born ballerina Irina Baronova, 1919-2008, the former owner of this collection, was one of the "baby ballerinas" discovered by choreographer George Balanchine in Paris in the 1930s. During the course of her career she danced with many of the most prominent ballet companies of the time, among them the Original Ballets Russes, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and Ballet Theatre, and appeared in films and musicals.
