- Biography (note)
- George Balanchine's ballet A midsummer night's dream (music, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy), based on William Shakespeare's comedy, was first presented by the New York City Ballet at City Center, New York, in 1962 with scenery and lighting by David Hays and costumes by Barbara Karinska. In 1964 Hays and Karinska redesigned the sets and costumes to make them more suitable for the larger stage and auditorium of New York State Theater, the company's new home. According to the catalog of the George Balanchine Foundation, Hays subsequently adapted the scenery in 1980 to facilitate its use in repertory. This design was apparently made for that purpose.
