- George Balanchine's ballet A midsummer night's dream (music, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy; scenario based on William Shakespeare's play) was first performed by the New York City Ballet in 1962. Costume designer Barbara Karinska, 1886-1983, created costumes for many of the great choreographers of the twentieth century. Her collaboration with Balanchine began with his ballet Cotillon in 1932, and her illustrious career culminated with a fourteen-year-long association with his New York City Ballet.
