Biography (note)

Leonide Massine's ballet Saratoga (music and scenario, Jaromir Weinberger) was first presented by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1941, with sets by Oliver Smith and costumes by Alvin Colt. It combined themes of romance and horse-racing, set in the town of Saratoga Springs, New York. Although it was considered a failure as a ballet, it marked Smith's first professional credit in a long and distinguished career.
Oliver Smith designed sets for ballet, musical theatre, opera, drama, and film. His long association with American Ballet Theatre began with Jerome Robbins's first ballet, Fancy free, in 1944, and he served as the company's co-director, with Lucia Chase, from 1945 to 1980.
