Biography (note)
  • Birthday (choreography, Tatiana Chamié; music, Gioacchino Rossini, arranged by Nicolas Chamié) was first presented by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1949. Mstislav Dobuzhinskiĭ created a number of set and costume designs for this ballet, though most of them are larger in size than this painting, and the actual costumes were credited to Barbara Karinska. The pink birthday cake in this painting, with its white decorations and candles, resembles the cake in one of his set designs (see *MGZGB Dob M Bir 1).
  • Mstislav Dobuzhinskiĭ, born in Russia of Lithuanian extraction, was a painter, illustrator, and stage designer. He trained as an artist in western Europe, and upon returning to Russia he joined the Mir Iskusstva or World of Art group led by Serge Diaghilev, who later formed the Ballets Russes. Dobuzhinskiĭ began to design sets and costumes in Russia, working with Meyerhold and Stanislavsky, and later collaborated on ballets produced by Diaghilev. In 1939 he came to the United States, where he eventually settled. His many stage designs include works for the Metropolitan Opera, Ballet Theatre, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and other companies in the United States and abroad.
