Summary
Panel 1: Sufjan Stevens discusses the evolution of the music he created, how it was rearranged for string quartet and became a new album entitled Run rabbit run, when Justin Peck first heard Stevens' music and what was danceable about it, how Peck begin using Stevens' music at the Choreographic Institute, Peck contacting Stevens after he received the commission from Peter Martins to create this work, how Peck wanted a full orchestration of music to accompany this large work in a grand space, what Stevens thought about making the full orchestration of his work, Peck talking about how his choreography was driven by Stevens' music and that the music really speaks to him, and discusses the first dance excerpt performed by Joaquin De Luz from the second movement of Year of the rabbit. Panel 2: Michael Atkinson discusses the process of taking the original CD and creating the string quartet because none of the music was written down, the biggest challenges as an arranger and orchestrator, how he created the full orchestration, playing excerpts of original electronic versions of Year of the boar (boar I) and Year of the ox (ox 1) with each section followed by a full orchestration versions (boar II and ox II), Atkinson watching dance rehearsals and changing orchestration and beat accents to help dancers hear the music better, how Peck worked with the corps to create complex patterns from his original drawings, shows one drawing from Year of the rooster and Atkinson talks about and plays the electronic version of Year of the rooster before that excerpt is danced by Teresa Reichlen and Robert Fairchild. Panel 3: Peck begins with a description of the ABC structure of the section just performed, how Peck cast this ballet by listening to the music and envisioning specific dancers in each role, working in the studio as a choreographer and how being a dancer affects his pacing of the ballet, getting choreographic ideas and inspirations from the dancers, and how the next section being performed by Tiler Peck was originally created on someone else (Ashley Bouder) and how it is to work with a dancer that didn't originate the role. Panel 4: Peck discusses how the personalities of the dancers really shows when performing this work, researching the Chinese Zodiac signs for relationships in this work, Stevens and Atkinson talk about their ideas regarding ballet before this process and how it has changed, Peck talks about the impact Tiler Peck had on him when he saw her perform as the Dew Drop in The nutcracker, what the panelists have learned from this experience, what work is left to be done before the premiere, how the orchestration is still changing, and Peck discusses the final excerpt performed from Year of our Lord with Janie Taylor and Craig Hall.
