Summary

Panel 1: Sufjan Stevens discusses how the music was created, how it was rearranged for string quartet, how Justin Peck begin using Stevens' music at the Choreographic Institute, how Peck contacted Stevens only after he received the commission from Peter Martins to create this work, and how Stevens usually composes music. Panel 2: Justin Peck begins with talking about his use of unconventional shapes in his choreography, how the movement is guided by the music and its rhythm, Michael Atkinson discusses his process of taking the string quartet score and making it into a full orchestration, he plays excerpts of original string quartet versions from Ox 1 and Boar 1, and then plays the new full orchestra versions of Ox 2 and Boar 2, Justin Peck talks about the differences between musicians and dancers in regards to counting, how this collaboration has worked between all of them, how the score has changed since this process began, and how Peck worked with the corps to create complex patterns from his original drawings. Panel 3: Peck begins with a description of the ABC structure of the section just performed, how Peck cast this ballet, working in the studio as a choreographer, and how the next section being performed by Tiler Peck was originally created on someone else and how it is to work with a dancer that didn't originate the role. Panel 4: Peck discusses researching the Chinese Zodiac signs for this choreography, Stevens' reaction to the music when it changed to full orchestration, what was Stevens' idea of ballet before he began this project, Michael Atkinson talks about his process of spending time with the dancers and going to rehearsals, the greatest challenges involved with doing this project for all of them, reaching out to younger audiences, and what are some of their future projects.
