  • Proof impressions of lithographs included in artist's book published as: Mushroom book / John Cage, Lois Long, Alexander H. Smith. New York : Hollanders Workshop, 1972. Book contains 10 bifolia of Arches paper with 20 full-page lithographs on rectos, 10 each alternately by Cage and Long, printed from 12 stones and 59 aluminum plates. Cage's lithographs are reproductions of his handwritten texts, some with maps and other sketched material; Long's lithographs are life-size color illustrations of 15 mushroom species. "The lithographs were drawn by artists John Cage and Lois Long and handprinted at Hollanders Workshop, Inc."--Colophon. Includes also letterpress t.p. and colophon on bifolium of Arches paper, and 10 sheets of letterpress (transcriptions of Cage's texts and botanical statements by Smith) on translucent Japanese Kitakata paper, inserted in the bifolia and serving as overlays for Long's prints. "The overlay text was set by Marion Lennihan in Computype Garamond and printed ... at Hollanders Workshop, Inc. The title and colophon page were designed by Bert Clarke and printed by A. Colish, Inc., Mount Vernon, N.Y."--Colophon. Overlay sheets are numbered I-X; bifolia numbered I-X in ms.
  • Collection Includes trial proofs of bifolia III-VI and VIII-X, with each of the 14 prints inscribed "Trial proof" and signed in pencil by the respective artist; loose trial proofs of 9 of Long's prints, each inscribed "Trial proof" and signed in pencil by Long; state proofs and other proofs of Long's prints, some annotated, some with variant color combinations, arranged in folders, which are annotated with number of stones and plates employed; folder containing proofs of an unused print by Long; proofs of 2 other unused prints by Long, one accompanied by an aluminum plate; and several miscellaneous proof impressions of Long's prints. Also includes proof of the letterpress t.p. and colophon and proofs of 2 overlay sheets, numbered VI (2 copies) and X.
