- Summary
- Houghton, a renowned theatre director, discusses the play "Billy Budd," (written by Coxe and Chapman and based on Melville's novella) and its production that he directed. He analyzes the characters and the main story line, and compares the play to the novella. Houghton examines the possibilities of conveying the emotional values of the story in a theatre production and the changes to the story the dramatists had to make for the production. Shumlin, a theatrical manager having no connection with the play, who wrote and paid for his own advertisement in The New York Times expressing his admiration and enthusiasm for the drama and its production, gives reasons for the financial failure of this play and speaks about theater economics. The 3rd speaker is the host, Howard Lindsay, a playwright and a theatrical producer, who participates in all topics of this discussion that includes general issues such as the public's tastes, popularity and attendance, the effect of criticism, and such.
