  • With photocopy of 46-p. typescript inventory of letters by and to Sophia Peabody Hawthorne in the Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature, New York Public Library, donated by Mrs. Clifford Smyth, April 1953, to Julian Hawthorne, with inscribed envelope in which it was donated.
  • Una Hawthorne, Julian Hawthorne, and Rose Hawthorne Lathrop were the children of Nathaniel and Sophia Hawthorne. Rose Hawthorne married author George Parsons Lathrop in 1871; both converted to Roman Catholicism in 1891. Rose became a nun after her husband's death in 1898.
  • Elizabeth Palmer Peabody was the eldest of the three Peabody sisters, the youngest of whom, Sophia, married Nathaniel Hawthorne.
