3. Neal Cassady, fictionalized in Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road (1956) as Dean Moriarity, and in Kerouac's Visions of Cody as Cody Pomeray, was a compulsive gambler who was particularly drawn to thoroughbred racing.

Cassady is quoted, apparently from a letter to his wife, Carolyn, "always bet on the third-choice horse on the grounds that the odds are better and the first two choices are overrated" (David Sandison and Graham Vickers.
