Depiction of a woman in a hieratic pose, echoing the form of the letter I. Her headdress, jewelry, and close-fitting robe suggest Byzantine influence.

  • Penciled below image: 1 1/2" x 2 7/16".
  • Penciled on the verso: 2 color, same seperation [sic] as last stuff.
  • The design, originally ca. 14.5 cm. high, was revised by the artist to a height of 11 cm. The mat frames only the revised design.

  • Ruth St. Denis, a founder of American modern dance, frequently portrayed priestesses and goddesses in her choreographic works. This design may relate to an actual work, perhaps one of those whose title begins with the letter I, such as "Ishtar of the seven gates."
