- Summary
- Program honoring playwright John Van Druten, focusing on material from the collection of his papers held by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Brooke Hayward discusses the professional relationship between her mother, actress Margaret Sullavan, and Van Druten. She also reads from correspondence in the collection concerning Tennesse Williams' play A streetcar named Desire, from the period when Sullavan was being considered for the lead role. Dorothy Sarnoff discusses Gertrude Lawrence, with whom she performed in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The king and I, under Van Druten's direction. Performers Yuriko and Celeste Holm, who were also in the production, share their memories of the experience, and of the show's star, Yul Brynner.
