Summary

Scene from the opera L'Hipermestra, depicting the meeting of two men in a tree-lined clearing; a row of men stands at left. It is framed by the proscenium of the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili [Teatro alla Pergola], Florence. The coat of arms above the proscenium bears the motto of the Accademia, "In sva movenza e fermo" [i.e., "In sua movenza è fermo"], with the word "Immobili" below.

Biography (note)

• L'Hipermestra (music, Francesco Cavalli; libretto, Giovanni Andrea Moniglia; scenery, Ferdinando Tacca) was first performed at the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili, Florence, in 1658, on the occasion of the birth of a son to King Philip of Spain. Derived from ancient Greek myth, the story treats the dilemma of Hypermestra, whose loyalties are torn between her father and lover.
• Etching made by Silvio degli Alli after a design by Ferdinando Tacca. The online catalog of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which holds copies of other scenes from L'Hipermestra, notes that these etchings were made in two plates, one for the proscenium and one for the scene onstage.
