Summary

1. Images of dancers and dance scenes from ballets and operas, as depicted on the covers of sheet music intended for performance in the home. As indicated by the titles, the musical scores (not included in this collection) were often arranged by composers other than the original creators. Both music and pictures were probably meant to be souvenirs or remembrances of performances enjoyed in the theatre. These music covers sometimes reused or recycled images created and published on other musical scores: for example, this collection's music cover for Henri Rosellen's arrangement of the polka from Le diable à quatre utilizes an image by Henri Emy (uncredited here) that illustrated a musical arrangement by Fessy.

This collection includes images of three ballets by Joseph Mazilier: Aelia et Mysis, ou L'atellane (music, Henri Potier), first performed at the Académie Imperiale de Musique, Paris, in 1853; Le diable à quatre (music, Adolphe Adam), first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1845; and Paquita (music, Edouard Deldevez), first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1846. The operas include M.W. Balfe's The Bohemian girl, first performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, in 1843; Meyer Lutz's opera burlesque Faust up to date, first performed at the Gaiety Theatre, London, in 1888; Charles Lecocq's opéra comique La fille de Madame Angot, first performed at the Théâtre des Fantaisies-Parisiennes, Brussels in 1872; Fromental Halévy's Le Juif errant, first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1852; Edward Loder's The night dancers, based on the ballet Giselle, first performed at the Princess's Theatre, London, in 1846; and Giacomo Meyerbeer's Robert le diable, first performed at the Paris Opéra in 1831. The black crook, considered to be a prototype of the modern musical, was first performed at Niblo's Garden, New York City, in 1866, with a book by Charles M.
