Summary
"Doughboy" with medal on his chest and trophy of German helmet hanging from his neck, holding little boy in his right arm, his left arm embracing his wife as she looks up at him adoringly and holds the crucifix of the medal pinned to his uniform tunic.

  • This was the most successful of the Liberty Loan campaign posters, becoming the iconic image of American patriotism during the First World War. Orr's wife was the model for the veteran's spouse.

  • "Upon the entry of the United States into World War I in April 1917, it at once became apparent that large sums in excess of tax receipts would be needed both to provide funds for European allies and to conduct the war activities of the nation. To obtain the necessary funds, the Treasury resorted to borrowing through a series of bond issues.
