Summary

Diary kept while traveling in England and on the Continent, May 1, 1833 to October 2, 1834, during which time he attended to legal business and represented a land agency. It records their expenses from the time of their arrival at Liverpool on May 23; trip to Chester and Eaton Hall; their six weeks at London, where they were entertained by friends, received at Court; Mr. Hoffman's introduction to the King's Bench; sightseeing trips; attendance at the opera, concerts, and theatre; friendship with Lady Wellesley, the former Miss Caton of Baltimore; attendance at meeting of the Association of British and Foreign Philosophers and the Grand Musical Festival at Cambridge University; prosecution of claims of Mrs. Francis Newman vs. Rogers; Mr. Pinckney and the Leigh estate claim; tour from Oxford to the Isle of Wight and return to London; comments on the Church in England and the manners and mendacity of the English people; a month's stay at Paris before meeting their son, Frederick, and daughter, Anne, on their arrival at Liverpool from Baltimore; illness of the son whom Mrs. Hoffman took to France; Mr. Hoffman's detention in England on legal business; his visit to York Cathedral; association with Henry Evelyn Pierrepont at London; compromise in case of Newman vs. Rogers; reunion with family, December 9, at Lyons where his son died; trip to Rome via Cannes, Nice, Genoa and Florence; sightseeing at Rome and Naples during April 1834; interview with the Pope; return to Paris on July 22 via Switzerland, western Germany and Belgium; arrival on August 11 at London where revisits the status of Mrs. Newman's claim; and sightseeing in London until October when they sailed for home. Appended are a list of books; memoranda of purchases; an estimate of monthly expenses at Rome; list of places and sights in England; inventory of contents of packing cases; and miscellaneous memoranda.
