Summary

1. Portraits and candid shots of authors, dating from the 1920s to the 1980s, with the bulk of the photographs dating from the 1950s, depicting African Americans writers, as well as Africans and others. Most of the items are studio portraits, many used for dust jackets and/or publicity purposes. Among the authors depicted are Rashida Abu-Bakr, Kofi Awooner, Jayne Cortez, Paula Gidding, June Jordan, Ronald Milner, Haki Madhubuti, and Michael Weaver [Afaa M. Weaver]. Early authors include Walter H. Brooks, Daniel Webster Davis, John Willis Menard, Charles Lewis Reason, George Clinton Rowe and Austin Stewart. Included in the collection are views of a Federal Writers' Project (N.Y.) workshop and exhibition.
2. Photographs of many of the major writers from the Harlem renaissance may be found in the Portrait Collection as well as other photograph collections.
