Summary
Laura Pettibone (dancer) discusses first taking an Erick Hawkins workshop; studying at the Hawkins studio; ideas she learned about anatomy and how it connects to physics and artistry; how she joined the Hawkins Dance Company and the first pieces she performed including Classic kite tails, Orpheus, Greek dreams with flute and premiering in Plains daybreak; Pettibone performed in Hawkins company from 1979-1991; how she learned roles; Hawkins' choreography book; Hawkins' creative process while choreographing Agathlon; learning choreographic works without music; using body make-up; creating leotard dances, Heyoka and Summer clouds people; working with modern composers and dancing to live music; performing Plains daybreak over 500 times and how she always listened to opening bass clarinet solo composed by Alan Hovhaness during every concert; how Hawkins worked with Hovhaness and their letter correspondence; Hawkins always created works with dancers wearing costumes so he could see how the movement looked; Pettibone's experience of taking a taxi home from airport with Hawkins, his apartment being robbed but nothing being taken and how his refrigerator has no writing in it because everything is transferred into plain containers; Ralph Lee's comments at Hawkins' Joyce Theater memorial where he addressed the realization that Hawkins was the teacher he always wanted; how Hawkins changed choreography for different dancers and the problems it created when teaching new dancers the roles; arguments between dancers about movement positions and timing, and Hawkins teaching his roles to other male dancers; learning the Heyoka stomping section and how it relates to flamenco dancing; the financial issues for the company; Lucia Dlugoszewski's music, its uniqueness, and description of her apartment; Pettibone currently teaches 9 yr. old students in Virgina Beach's gifted school program, she gets students for an entire 7 hour day of dancing where she incorporates Hawkin's technique and choreography; and concludes with her feelings about the Hawkins legacy.
