- [Begins abruptly.] Maria Tallchief speaks with Mindy Aloff, by telephone, about George Balanchine and the musical comedy Song of Norway, including her speaking part as an understudy for Alexandra Danilova; Balanchine's musicality as the reason she immediately wanted to dance for him; how impressed she was by Mary Ellen Moylan; an anecdote about Balanchine's telling her to learn battement tendu; more on Balanchine's approach to music as expressed in dance; mentions several of the dances in Song of Norway; Balanchine's skill as a director; his never repeating himself in his choreography; his preference for demonstrating rather than speaking; his ballet Orpheus, including an anecdote about the stage curtain; more, in general terms, on some of the dances in Song of Norway; the costumes; various experiences with conductors; very briefly, Where's Charley?; very briefly, the critics' responses to Song of Norway, Where's Charley, The chocolate soldier, and Mr. Strauss goes to Boston and Balanchine's apparent indifference to them; Freddy [Frederic Franklin] and his relationship with Balanchine; steps and movements Balanchine taught her and Nicky [Nicholas] Magallanes.
