Summary

• Recorded on Apr. 1, 1990 (ca. 38 min.) Jerome Robbins rehearses a speech for the memorial service of Slim Keith. The recording contains multiple versions of the same material. Robbins begins by reading the epilogue from Keith's book, Slim: memories of a rich and imperfect life. The excerpt lasts approximately 6 min. Robbins then speaks about his reactions to the book; differences between the way Keith perceived herself and the way others perceived her; and memories of times they spent together. He discusses Keith's personality and "appetite for life," her extravagance, her role as wife and mother, and how she influenced his relationship with his father.
• Recorded in May, 1990 (ca. 18 min.) Jerome Robbins rehearses a speech for the memorial service of Pat Dunn. He begins by talking about the nicknames he and Dunn had for each other. He describes how he first met Dunn at an audition, his admiration for her dancing, her performing style and acting ability, and her interpretation of the role of the wife in his ballet The concert. He speaks about sharing a villa with Dunn and others in Spoleto, Italy, and discusses how she handled her final illness. Two additional versions of the speech follow, both containing a re-telling of the account of their meeting at an audition. Robbins also recounts an anecdote about a dancer who appeared in his production of the musical comedy The king and I, and speaks about Dunn's performance in his ballet N.Y. export: opus jazz. The recording breaks off abruptly.
