Summary
The Afro-American Press Collection consists of portraits of editors and contributing writers for 19th century African American journals, representing various fields such as teaching and ministry. The images were removed from the publication "The Afro-American Press and its Editors" by I. Garland Penn. The earliest portraits show journalists for abolitionist publications and include Frederick B. Douglass. Other images depict ministers who became editors of religious publications including Rev. Richard Allen, Rev. J. Alexander Holmes, and Rev. W. S. Lowry. Among the portraits of editors of early daily African American journals are B. T. Harvey and Hon. W. S. Scott. Of note are portraits of pioneering female African Americans, including Ida H. Wells. Collection includes a view of Black Harry "The Preacher," an African American servant said to have been famous for his oration. Collection represents a minority of the portraits found in the book.
