- Summary
- The Union Settlement Cultural Center Collection, dating from the 1950s to the 1970s, consists of individual and group portraits of its staff and participants and documents its activities including programs in art and music. Also included are publicity portraits of Burt Lancaster and Ossie Davis as well as film stills from "The Scalp Hunter" which feature them. As a child, Lancaster frequented the Center and later became a donor. Photographs prior to the 1950s are sparse as is documentation of the Center's dance and drama programs. There are no photographs documenting Lancaster's childhood involvement in the Center.
- The collection contains individual portraits of the Center's founder, Gaylord S. White, and its other directors, Thelma Hall and H. Blake Hobbs. Hobbs is also pictured in candid shots playing various musical instruments. Photographs of the Center's music activities depict children and adults playing instruments in music classes, on stage and outdoors, and in a marching band; and adults singing in a choir. Schoolchildren are shown learning to play the recorder and subsequently giving performances at P.S. 108, East Harlem, New York City (1960). Included are photos of singer/drummer George Bragg and cellist Ronald Lipscomb.
- The Center's art activities are documented by photographic reproductions of artwork and indoor and outdoor art shows. One photograph depicts older adults working on art projects. In an unidentified classroom, young children are shown drawing, listening to stories, taking care of a caged pet, as well as playing in a playground. The collection contains photographs of the new Union Settlement Building constructed in 1965, as well its ground-breaking ceremony with then New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner.
