Summary
  • Maria Bayard was the daughter of William Bayard of New York City and later the wife of Duncan P. Campbell. She kept this diary while on a tour of England, Scotland, and France with her brother, Robert Bayard, and brother-in-law, Benjamin Woolsey Rogers. Entries date from the time of their landing at Southampton, England on October 13, 1814 until May 23, 1815. The diary for England and Scotland contains a descriptive narrative of the tour of cathedral towns, Roman ruins, castles, palaces, art galleries, factories, salt mines, iron furnaces, canals, and places of natural beauty, with comments on the social and economic condition of the population. The group's itinerary included Bath, Nailsworth, Bristol, Gloucester, Worcester, Birmingham, Warwick Castle, Kennilworth, Litchfield, Liverpool, Chester, Norwich, Manchester, Lancaster, the English Lakes, Carlisle, Gretna Green, Edinburgh (where they arrived in January), Glasgow, Paisley, Linlithcoe, Northumberland Castle, Durham, York, and Oxford.
  • In the reverse of the same volume, Bayard kept a diary of her tour of France from the date of her embarkation for le Havre, March 2(?), 1815 until May 23, 1815, covering almost the entire period of Napoleon's Hundred Days. The diary contains a descriptive narrative of the party's stay at Paris, visits to the opera, theaters, cathedral towns, chateaux, factories, canals, Roman ruins, and their view of Napoleon and his brothers. Their itinerary included Rouen, Paris, Orleans, Tours, Poitiers, Angouleme, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Carcassonne, Beziers, Montpellier, Nimes, Valence, Lyon, Autun, Auxerre, Villeneuve, Fontainebleau, Chantilly, Amiens, Calais, Dover, and Canterbury. The diary includes entries comparing French and English travel.
